Project Open Hearts, Open Homes provides respite and comfort to young Israeli teens affected by violence and war. Every summer since 2002, teens have come to our community, thanks to the sponsorship of the YJCC's Project Open Hearts, Open Homes. They spend three weeks with their American peers in the YJCC Teen Travel Camp, living with nurturing host families and making connections to a Jewish community far from their homeland. Although their lives are filled with tension, for a short while they find relief.
The YJCC is committed to providing the Project Open Hearts, Open Homes opportunity to Israeli teens. Family reaches out to family. And as our brothers and sisters in Israel face conflicts and threats, we offer an alternative to their children: three weeks in Bergen County—three weeks of life without fear.
"Open Hearts showed me that there is another life...a life without bombs. It's not just like I live."
- Rahel, Project Open Hearts, Open Homes teen from Sderot
“The best part is not listening for sirens…I’m able to relax a little now. Every loud noise gets me nervous at home.”
- Liraz, Project Open Hearts, Open Homes teen from Sderot
By all accounts, the therapeutic value of this program is extraordinary. But the Israeli teens are not the only ones who benefit from Project Open Hearts, Open Homes. Their American friends and fellow campers experience a strengthening of Jewish identity and a deepening commitment to Israel.
“A piece of my heart is still there.”
- Amy Wexler, Project Open Hearts, Open Homes host, after visiting her Open Hearts teens in Israel
Project Open Hearts, Open Homes is privately funded, relying on assistance from the entire Bergen County community in order to extend this lifeline of support and respite. A gift of $6,500 provides a full scholarship for one teen to participate; donations in any amount are greatly appreciated. In addition, families who are able to host Israeli teens are needed.
